Torquay 'ready to go' says Wotton

Torquay United boss Paul Wotton said his side are ‘ready to go’ ahead of their National League South opener at home to Enfield Town.

After a busy summer for the Gulls, on and off the field, the big kick-off is upon them and Wotton can’t wait to see his new charges in league action for the first time at Plainmoor.

“We’re looking forward to it,” said Wotton, “This week has felt like a long week, but now the boys are ready to go. We’ve got a little bit of prep work left, but then we’re good to go.

“We can’t wait to start the season and being at home for the first game is great. Hopefully, we get a fantastic crowd, good weather and we do our job.”

With just one player signed up when he stepped into the building, it’s been quite a pre-season for Wotton, who himself moved to Torquay after a number of years with Truro City.

“It’s been challenging for sure. I’m not going to sit here and say it’s been easy. I always do a six-week pre-season and this one has been exactly the same. It’s felt a bit longer at times, especially dealing with the signings and agents. If we had signed every player I wanted or agents were sending to me, we would have had a squad of 300.

‘It’s part of football and part of management I don’t particularly enjoy, but the boys have been brilliant to coach. The work ethic and their attitude towards pre-season has been great, so that’s been a pleasure.

“Now, once the season gets going, the weeks will just fly by. League football is normality, it’s what we all know, so the sooner we start that, the better it will be for us.”

With a near fully-fit squad available to him, Wotton knows he will have plenty to ponder ahead of kick-off on Saturday afternoon.

“It’s amazing how niggly little injuries clear up when that first game is on Saturday,” joked Wotton. “We’ve had a couple not train fully as a precaution, but I think we will have a full squad to pick from.

“We’re as prepared as we can be, but I’m also very respectful of Enfield. They will be very hard-working, organised and well coached, but we’ll see come five o’clock on Saturday if we’re sat here with the three points.”
