Obafemi joins Argyle on loan

Plymouth Argyle boss Wayne Rooney says he’s ‘thrilled’ to have bolstered his squad with the signing of Michael Obafemi on loan from Burnley.

Obafemi is the seventh signing of Rooney’s reign at Home Park and he arrives in Devon having previously enjoyed spells with Southampton, Swansea City, Burnley and, last season, Millwall on loan.

The Dublin-born striker has played 12 times for the Republic of Ireland, scoring twice, since his debut in 2018.

On completion of the deal, Rooney – whose side travel to Queen’s Park Rangers in the Sky Bet Championship this weekend – said: “We are thrilled that we have managed to secure the services of Michael. He was really keen to come and be a part of what we are building here at Argyle.

“He fits the profile of player I want as part of the squad and complements the style of play we are looking to implement.”

Obafemi’s arrival will certainly add to Rooney’s options up front, particularly as the Pilgrims look to seal their first win in the Championship at Loftus Road.

Argyle are believed to have been working hard on the deal in recent days, a point underlined by Director of Football, Neil Dewsnip, who added: “We have beaten off several Championship sides to bring Michael to the football club.

“He has excellent pedigree having played at both Championship and Premier League level throughout his career and will further strengthen our forward line.

“He’s quick, powerful and scores goals, and we are really excited that he has decided to join us for the rest of the season.”
