Matchwinner Ash says Gulls are looking to build

Torquay United match-winner Brad Ash says he and his team-mates are looking to build on what has been a great start to the new National League South season.

Monday’s 3-2 victory at Chesham, secured by Ash’s goal deep into injury time, made it four wins from five starts for Paul Wotton’s side, who lie second in the table, level on 12 points with leaders Slough.

Having trailed to a Joe Grant goal, Torquay levelled things up on the stroke of half time when Cody Cooke netted from the penalty spot, only for Grant to restore the home side’s lead just past the hour mark.

The response from the visitors was impressive and having drawn level again through Dan Hayfield five minutes later, it was Ash who nodded home a Dean Moxey cross to seal the points.

“It’s been a great start,” said Ash. “We were relentless again today. This is a difficult place to come, but by coming here and picking up the three points, it shows we can do the dirty side of the game as well, so we’re very happy.”

The Chesham win came just 48 hours after the Gulls sealed an impressive 1-0 win over visiting Dorking Wanderers at Plainmoor.

“We’re a new team and we’re having to learn all the time,” added Ash. “It’s a great group, though, who are learning quickly. You can see the results showing on the pitch because we’re winning games.

“That said, we know we can be better and we need to keep going.”
