Tijani at the double for the Pilgrims

Summer signing Muhamed Tijani scored twice as Plymouth Argyle picked up their first win of pre-season with victory at Cheltenham Town.

The on-loan striker from Czech side Slavia Prague helped the Pilgrims to a 5-1 success with Ibrahim Cissoko, Morgan Whittaker and Ryan Hardie also finding the net against their League Two hosts.

It sealed a first win for new Argyle boss Wayne Rooney, who had earlier seen his side fall behind to a 19th minute goal from Liam Dulson.

Rooney said: "I thought there was some really good phases of play. Of course, there are still things we can do better but I'm pleased with the performance from everyone, even the lads who came on for the last 30 minutes.

"I thought it was exciting. We have got some really good players in the top end of the pitch and we caused Cheltenham problems and scored five goals. It's always pleasing when you win.

"It's stuff we have been working on. There are some details which we can improve on , we were a little bit sloppy at times with a few passes which can cost you, but overall I was really pleased."

"After the game over in Spain [against Orlando Pirates], we have had a good week's training to get ready for this game, and it's important to get the fitness into the players as well."

With a trip to Torquay United next up for Argyle this coming Saturday, Rooney will again use the week to get his seasonal messages across to his players.

"The lads have been great, everyone at the club has been great to be honest. I'm really enjoying coming in and working with the players,” said Rooney.

"They are a good group of players, very hard working. Everything I have asked of them they have tried to do to the best of their ability. I couldn't be happier with the group we have got.

"I think fitness-wise we are in a good place. The lads have put a lot of work in. Now, the next few games before Sheffield Wednesday, it's a chance for us to work on patterns of play and how we are going to exploit teams and get in the final third, but also how we are going to tighten up defensively."
