Pilgrims sack Foster with immediate effect

Plymouth Argyle Football Club have confirmed Head Coach Ian Foster has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect. The Pilgrims confirmed the news in the wake of their 1-0 defeat at home to Bristol City in the Sky Bet Championship.

The defeat means Argyle have failed to win and score in five successive matches at Home Park - and leaves the Devon club sitting just one point above the relegation zone.

Foster had been under mounting pressure following a dismal run of results and the Argyle board felt it was necessary to make a change in a bid to secure their Championship survival for next season and beyond.

As was the case when Steven Schumacher left the club back in December, Director of Football Neil Dewsnip, along with first-team coach Kevin Nancekivell, will take charge of the first team for the remainder of the 2023/24 season.

Chairman Simon Hallett said: “Ian was hired through a thorough and extensive recruitment process and his coaching credentials really stood out when making the appointment. However, we have to balance long-term stability against short-term decisions and we have given Ian as long as possible to see if results could improve.

“Unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case, so we feel now is the right time to make a change to give us the best chance of securing survival."

“The Green Army have been incredible in recent weeks, as ever, and we need you all now to continue that support as we embark on the final weeks of the campaign with Neil and Nance in charge.

“Together we can achieve what we set out to achieve at the start of the season.”

Foster took charge of the Pilgrims back in January, having joined the club from Saudi Arabian outfit Al Ettifaq, where he served as assistant to former Liverpool and England midfielder, Steven Gerrard.

Since taking charge, Foster led Argyle to just three victories in the Championship, the last of which was a 1-0 victory away to Middlesbrough.
