Cooper seals move to Sheffield United

Widely regarded as one of the hottest goalkeepers in the English Football League, Michael Cooper has left Plymouth to join Sky Bet Championship rivals Sheffield United.

The 24-year-old, who turned down the offer of a new deal with the Pilgrims last month, has completed his medical, agreed personal terms and joins the Blades for an undisclosed fee.

Since making his debut for Argyle six years ago, Cooper made a total of 161 appearances for the Devon club. He helped Argyle win two promotions, as well as being named in Teams of the Year and numerous Player of the season awards.

Argyle boss Wayne Rooney was hopeful he would be able to change the mind of Cooper into staying at Home Park, but sadly his efforts were in vain and the player has now moved on.

“It feels brilliant that we’ve got the move over the line and I’m excited to get started,” said Cooper. “The manager couldn't speak highly enough of the club, the fanbase, the ambition, the squad - it was all very attractive for me to make a decision to come here. This is a huge opportunity in front of me, I have had a lot of great memories at Argyle but when an opportunity like Sheffield United presents itself, it is almost impossible to say no.”

In addition, Blades boss Chris Wilder said: "Michael has been one of our major targets, which is why we have persevered on this deal and he was very keen to join.

“He’s young at 24, but with over 150 games behind him, so there’s experience there too. He’s a winner, as proven by the role he played in getting Plymouth into this division, and he now has Championship experience behind him too.”
