Cooper content as Yeovil get off the mark

Mark Cooper praised his Yeovil Town side after they got their new Vanarama National League campaign up and running with a 1-0 victory away to Braintree Town.

A second half strike from Morgan Williams proved to be the difference on the day - and was the perfect tonic for Cooper and his team, who had lost by a similar scoreline in their league opener at home to Hartlepool United just seven days earlier.

“It can always ben tense when you don’t win your first game, but it’s nice to finally get off the mark with three points,” said the Glovers manager.

“It was a difficult pitch and a hot afternoon, so it was difficult for both sides to play how they wanted. First half, I was a little bit worried because there was not a lot of atmosphere, the pitch was hard, it was all a bit dead and players needed lifting in term of enthusiasm.

“We used half time to talk to the players and get them to under more about what we wanted from them and to show more enthusiasm. In the second half, I thought we were really good, especially dealing with their threats.

“They are a massive team, two good guys up front in [John] Akinde and [Inih] Effiong, so it meant we had to head a lot of balls out of the box. By the end of the game it was pretty relentless with balls coming in, but I thought we defended really well all across the pitch.”

Yeovil will continue their league campaign on Tuesday evening when they make the short trip to Bath City.
