Armand heading home in aid of charity

Former Exeter Chiefs and England star Don Armand is inviting rugby fans to join him on a unique experience back to his homeland of Zimbabwe later this year.

The 35-year-old is heading up the latest Tag Rugby Trust programme, which sees volunteers head to Africa to help promote inclusivity and positive social change within the community.

Initially set up in 2002, the Tag Rugby Trust started out with the aim to teach youngsters how to play the game. Over the years, however, there has been a distinct shift in focus with organisers now looking to expand further on that goal, as well stimulating social change through education and providing opportunities to improve young people’s chances in the rapidly changing employment landscape.

Since retiring from the Chiefs in 2022, Armand – who made 193 appearances for the Premiership club – has been tackling other projects, including the London Marathon, the Three Peaks Challenge, as well as running a couple of personal businesses.

Now, though, he is relishing the chance of teaming up with TRT again, having initially supported them back in 2021 when he helped promoted a ‘Pre-Loved Clothing to Zimbabwe’ initiative.

“I got approached by Martin Hansford from the Trust a few years ago to just put my name behind a few things,” said Armand. “I did a video, took some pictures and just offered my support in that way.

“Then, Martin came back to me and said ‘let’s do a tour’ – so that’s where we are. It’s an opportunity for me to go home with a group of volunteers, go into schools and help teach some tag rugby. At the same time, we’re going to help make a difference in a lot of other ways, so it’s hugely exciting.

“For a lot of these kids, just having that opportunity to do something different, learn something new, it can make a real difference. It’s not until you go into these communities that you realise just how much you can do for them.”

Spending just over a week in picturesque Victoria Falls this September (20-29), Armand and the team will conduct a special tag coaching programme in local schools, culminating in a tournament at the end of the week.

Tourists will also get the chance to work closely with Armand, as well as take in a safari at the Zambezi National Park, enjoy an African drumming evening and an elephant experience with EleCrew.

The cost of the trip is in the region of £2,000 and those interested can find out more information by emailing: DonsTour@tagrugbytrust.co.uk
